The ipod touch is having applications built for the front lines, The soldiers in iraq
will be receiving some top notch applications on the ipod touch and iphone.
Networking them together for instant battlefield intelligence, and you thought
the touch was for movies, music and games. Guess this will give new meaning
to using the ipod touch for a first person shooter.

Some of the applications will include a translation unit from Arabic to English.
The soldiers will be able to take a photo of a street sign and get instant intel
for the sector there entering. They?ll be able to show video?s to villagers of
local leaders who hopefully will help them give messages out as needed.

The Marine corps are developing an app that allows the soldiers to take a picture
of a insurgent which goes through biometric processing and can allow the soldiers
to track, report on, and help bring in the right person.

Snipers can use an app called bulletflight that will allow them to calculate wind
speed and other factors to get better shots with this handy ?ballistics calculator?.

Army researchers are developing and app for the touch that allows the personnel
to use it for remote controlled bomb disposal units.

Now only if they can get rid of itunes. (Hate that program, about as much as I
hate Digital Right Management.)

Apple has done this all with out tax payer money, and apparently the ipod
products are already rugged enough for deployment, the soldiers are already
owning them or have at least used them in the past.
